The Oahu SPCA was the first and largest animal shelter in Hawaii to adopt the “no-kill” philosophy. Their mission is to ensure that “Every healthy, treatable animal will find a forever home.”

In its first year of operation, the Oahu SPCA completed two record rescues. The first, which marked the largest animal rescue in the history of Hawaii, was the Waianae Rescue. On July 18, 2009, 432 animals were relinquished to the Oahu SPCA after the owner of an animal sanctuary in Waianae passed away. In the second rescue, which took place on the first anniversary of the Waianae Rescue, July 18, 2010, ninety-one displaced dogs and cats from Ma’ili Point Beach in West Oahu were saved, when authorities demolished approximately eighty homeless campsites.

Most of Oahu‘s homeless population have and rely on their companion animals, and in many cases these animals are the only ohana (family) they have. All of the ninety-one animals saved during the Ma’ili Point Rescue received much-needed care. Some of those animals rescued had lived their entire lives on the streets, and received medical attention for the first time. If not for the Oahu SPCA, these animals would have been left to roam the streets, endangering their lives and the lives of motorists.

The Oahu SPCA, while still in the infancy of their development, rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes more than 40 animals each month in addition to the animals from their second record rescue. This is why they are in need of the support of volunteers and tax-deductible donations from the public.

The Oahu SPCA is grateful for any time or resources its volunteers provide in the following areas:

Shelter team (feed/groom animals, cleaning, intake, exercise)
Foster homes for animals
Marketing and communication

The Devil's Excrement

Observations focused on the problems of an underdeveloped country, Venezuela, with some serendipity about the world (orchids, techs, science, investments, politics) at large. A famous Venezuelan, Juan Pablo Perez Alfonzo, referred to oil as the devil's excrement. For countries, easy wealth appears indeed to be the sure path to failure. Venezuela might be a clear example of that.
