Waihee Valley & Hamama Waterfall, Oahu, February 1, 2011 (140 Photos)

Waihee Valley, located on the eastern slopes of the Ko’olau Mountains on the Windward side, contains a natural rain forest, native birds and plants, streams, and the “secret” Hamama Falls which cascades over a ridge in the Ko’olau Mountains.

Historically, Waihee Valley is the last ahupua’a (Hawaiian land division that stretches from the uplands to the sea) on Oahu. The valley was given to Hewahewa, high priest and adviser to Kamehameha the Great after the later conquered Oahu in 1797 at the battle on Nuuanu Pali.

In the 1800s the land was used for fishing and farming. During the 1970’s and 1980’s Waihee Valley was one of the prime tourist attractions in Hawaii, but visitor figures declined in the 1990’s.

Today, the Board of Water Supply controls the, now restricted, land so in order to hike here you have to get permission from the Board of Water Supply (which only grants hiking groups access to the trail), sign a waiver, and show evidence of current liability insurance.

Because TODAY is my Birthday, I hiked alone!

The Devil's Excrement

Observations focused on the problems of an underdeveloped country, Venezuela, with some serendipity about the world (orchids, techs, science, investments, politics) at large. A famous Venezuelan, Juan Pablo Perez Alfonzo, referred to oil as the devil's excrement. For countries, easy wealth appears indeed to be the sure path to failure. Venezuela might be a clear example of that.
