Makapuu Trail, Waimanalo, Oahu, January 7, 2011 (125 Photos)

The Makapuu State Wayside Trail is located on the easternmost tip of Oahu in Waimanalo and once served as a former lighthouse access road which leads to Makapuu Point. A 2.5 mile single lane track leads up the western edge of Makapuu to the 35 foot high lighthouse which has the largest lens of any lighthouse in the United States. The area around the lighthouse is part of Makapuu Point State Park.

The 600-foot ocean bluff serves as a popular spot for whale watching during the summer months and the top of Makapuu Point houses two observation decks and several dilapidated World War ll bunkers. Off the shore from the steep cliffs lie Manana “Rabbit” Island and Kaohikaipu “Turtle” Island, both state seabird sanctuaries. Makapuu Point also has great views of the Windward Coast with Makapuu Beach and Sea Life Park at the base of its northern side.

The Devil's Excrement

Observations focused on the problems of an underdeveloped country, Venezuela, with some serendipity about the world (orchids, techs, science, investments, politics) at large. A famous Venezuelan, Juan Pablo Perez Alfonzo, referred to oil as the devil's excrement. For countries, easy wealth appears indeed to be the sure path to failure. Venezuela might be a clear example of that.
